Broccoli

Broccoli, like most other members of the crucifer family (cabbage, cauliflower, brussels sprouts) is a cool weather lover and can be a great option for both spring and fall production in KY. Attention should be paid to varietal selection when deciding on which season you will grow in. If you plan on doing a spring planting, it is recommended to prepare your soil in the fall to make sure you can get transplants in early. Broccoli does not tolerate heat, so planting too late in the spring, or too early in the fall can be detrimental to yields.

Pest & Disease

Insects can be a major problem for broccoli, especially with fall plantings. Weekly scouting and timely sprays when insects reach the economic threshold should be a priority. Many soil born diseases can also be an issue but can be combatted with good crop rotation.

  • Rapid fluctuations in temperature often seen in KY can be detrimental to broccoli and decreases marketability. 
  • Physiological disorders such as hollow stems can be an issue, and growers are urged to have their soil tested prior to planting.

  • Broccoli responds well to a plastic mulch/drip irrigation system which can minimize labor costs and improve food safety.
