Food Safety Plans New Publication for Urban Farms
All produce growers will benefit from having a farm food safety plan, with growers in urban areas facing some unique challenges. A new resource has been developed to help guide urban farmers through developing a basic food safety plan. The Farm Food Safety Plans for Urban Farms factsheet steps through the basic sections of a food safety plan – general farm information, production activities, harvest activities, and post-harvest handling – and gives tips for creating a plan specific to farming operations in urban settings.
Growers are encouraged to connect with the University of Kentucky Food Connection’s Cultivate Kentucky program for assistance with developing a farm-specific food safety plan. The Kentucky Department of Agriculture’s Produce Safety Team is also available for consultation to ensure compliance with federal and state food safety regulations.
