Produce Auctions are is a marketing channel for growers producing fruit and vegetable crops, nursery crops, and ornamentals. Several produce auctions are located throughout Kentucky, Ohio, Illinois, Pennsylvania, and other bordering states. Kentucky is home to six produce auctions, as of 2024 (see the Kentucky and Regional Produce Auctions Maps below). Produce auctions can vary in size and ownership structure, crop variety, and quality standards throughout the region; however, a similarity is that members of Amish and Mennonite communities manage many of these auctions.
The produce auction serves growers as a market to sell large quantities of crops while it serves buyers or consumers as a place to purchase fresh, local products in bulk. It is also an important source for resellers with Farmers Market stands, Roadside Markets, and other retail outlets.
